Largest-ever upgrade of the R1 Via Pribina highway completed in record time

  • The entire 52 km Via Pribina highway, including the northern Banská Bystrica bypass and all key interchanges, has been resurfaced.
  • 100% of the removed asphalt was recycled at local plants.
  • This is the largest modernization programme undertaken on the Via Pribina since it opened in 2011.

Via Pribina, the concessionaire of the Via Pribina highway, has successfully completed the full resurfacing of the entire 52 km, including all key interchanges. These works represent the most extensive modernization programme carried out since the highway entered service in 2011.

Thanks to close coordination between Via Pribina, jointly owned by VINCI Concessions and Meridiam, Via Pribina Operations, a VINCI Highways subsidiary, and EUROVIA SK, subsidiary of VINCI Construction, the works were completed in approximately half the originally planned time.

To minimize disruption for road users, construction capacity was doubled throughout the programme. Around 80 workers operated in two continuous shifts, including overnight, supported by 18 trucks, six pavers, six rollers and other specialized equipment working simultaneously. This exceptional mobilisation enabled major milestones to be delivered at record speed, including the complete reconstruction of a full interchange in just 66 hours.

Sustainability was also a key priority throughout the project with 100% of the removed asphalt recycled at local plants.

The new pavement provides a smoother and more comfortable ride, improved vehicle stability, enhanced drainage and shorter braking distances, particularly in wet weather. The result is a safer, more reliable and more resilient highway for all users.

Senka Jelenković, CEO of Via Pribina, declared: „Thanks to the excellent cooperation between Via Pribina, Via Pribina Operations and EUROVIA SK, several interchanges were reopened well ahead of schedule, significantly reducing traffic restrictions for drivers. This extensive preventive maintenance programme reflects the long-term vision of the Public-Private Partnership implemented with the Ministry of Transport of the Slovak Republic. Our concession model places strong emphasis on quality, safety and reliable infrastructure throughout the entire life cycle of the project.“

Róbert Šinály, CEO of EUROVIA SK, declared: „The resurfacing of the R1 Via Pribina highway ranks among the most extensive road infrastructure maintenance projects ever undertaken by EUROVIA SK. Through meticulous planning, night-time works on the busiest sections and close coordination with Via Pribina Operations, we minimized disruption to road users while completing the programme well ahead of schedule. The result is a modernized highway that will provide drivers with greater comfort, enhanced safety and long-term reliability.“

Modernization in numbers

  • since the start of the road resurfacing program in 2023, a total of 922,740 m² of of pavement were resurfaced on the Via Pribina highway, or nearly 1 million m²;
