Winter maintenance on Via Pribina introduces a new feature: intelligent sensors monitor salt levels in real time

This winter season on the Via Pribina highway brings a smart innovation: intelligent ultrasonic sensors that continuously monitor the level of de-icing salt in our silos.

Thanks to the sensors, the operators on the section between Nitra and Tekovské Nemce t know exactly how much salt is available and can restock immediately. The sensors are built to withstand harsh winter conditions: they are highly durable and function reliably even in frost, humidity, and mechanical stress.

The sensors complement the broader winter-maintenance strategy across the 52-kilometre expressway between Nitra and Tekovské Nemce, including the northern bypass of Banská Bystrica.
A key element of winter maintenance remains reaction time. Via Pribina Operations teams must intervene within 30 minutes from the first snowflakes – and in practice they often deploy even earlier.

Winter maintenance in numbers

• 34 operators working 24/7
• 14 specialised vehicles
• 1,200 tonnes of de-icing salt
• 4 silos and storage facilities
• 3.5 km of snow fences
• 32 km of noise barriers that also prevent snow from blowing onto the road

Winter maintenance is not only about technology and materials. Before the season, operators undergo annual professional training, vehicles are serviced and tested, and driver awareness is part of the campaign – Via Pribina has prepared winter driving safety tips that remind drivers that even a small change in behaviour can prevent major problems.

People, technology and solid preparation go hand in hand here. This winter, we are once again doing everything we can to ensure you can travel the Via Pribina safely and smoothly.
