Via Pribina confirms its role in regional mobility with positive performance in 2024

  • More than 15 million vehicles passed through the R1 Via Pribina expressway in 2024, a 6% increase from the previous year.
  • Zero fatalities and low accident rate in 2024
  • Ambitious modernization works improving safety and  fluidity

Via Pribina, the concessionaire of the R1 Via Pribina highway, the first public private partnership project with the Ministry of Transport of the Slovak republic, today unveiled its results for 2024, highlighting the expressway’s growing role in regional and economic mobility, continuous advancements in safety, and strengthened sustainability initiatives.

Traffic growth

In 2024, Via Pribina recorded 15,8M vehicles on the expressway, reflecting a 6% increase compared to 2023 (14,9M vehicles).

Traffic peaked in August, when more than 1,5 million vehicles passed through the highway.

These figures confirm Via Pribina’s essential role in both holiday travel and daily commuting, offering an average 10-minute time savings compared to driving on the old I/65 road, along with lower fuel consumption. The highway significantly improves travel efficiency, reinforcing its strategic importance in Slovakia’s transport network by providing faster, safer, and more cost-effective journeys.

Safer highway

The number of accidents with injuries dropped from 19 in 2023 to just 7 in 2024, reflecting the effectiveness of investments in safety measures. These include counter-flow detection cameras and targeted safety campaigns for all road users.

Further investments were made in heavy maintenance campaign, during which Via Pribina completed the reconstruction of a 52-kilometer section of the R1 highway towards Banská Bystrica, including the northern bypass and key intersections in the city. The renewed top asphalt layer is more durable, and all 40,000 tons of removed asphalt were fully recycled in local plants.

Despite extensive maintenance work, the highway remained open and accessible at nearly all times

The full modernization of the Via Pribina highway is set for completion by 2026, marking its most significant upgrade since 2011.

Investing in sustainability

In 2024, Via Pribina again strengthened its commitment to sustainability and infrastructure innovation with progress achieved on several key projects, such as Wild Meadows. This biodiversity protection initiative is now expanded to new areas in Banská Bystrica with the partnership with WWF Slovakia.

Now in its fifth year, the Wild Meadow project aims to transform barren land into a flourishing habitat for pollinators and native flora, strengthening local ecosystems and advancing sustainable land management

Complemented by other initiatives such as heat pumps and photovoltaic panels and an efficient waste management, Via Pribina s on track to receive a Zero-Waste Certification in 2025 for its operations.

Helping communities

In 2024, the Via Pribina Foundation supported a record number of 29 impact projects across Slovakia, focusing on education, health, and social inclusion. This marks the highest number of initiatives funded to date, reflecting the Foundation’s long-term commitment to social inclusion of marginalized groups, advocating for fair and equal opportunities, and giving back to the community.
