Via Pribina completes new phase of R1 Via Pribina highway resurfacing program
- Full 52-km corridor towards Banska Bystrica, and its northern bypass, now resurfaced
- 100 % of asphalt was recycled at local plants
- Resurfacing of the whole Via Pribina highway will be fully completed in 2026, representing the largest modernization works since 2011
Via Pribina, concessionnaire of the R1 highway, has finalized the resurfacing of the highway’s 52-km corridor in the direction of Banska Bystrica, as well of Banska Bystrica northern bypass and the Kostiviarska and Cementarenska intersections.
The works consisted of removing the highway’s upper layer to replace it with a new layer of asphalt, specially treated to extend the highway’s lifespan. The total resurfaced area exceeds 400 000 m², equivalent to 76 football fields. 100 % of the former asphalt (40,000 tons) was recovered and recycled at local plants. Via Pribina also modernized the highway’s horizontal road markings to provide clearer orientation for drivers.
The works were achieved in less than two years, 2 months ahead of schedule. Close cooperation between Eurovia SK, in charge of the works, and Via Pribina Operations, in charge of road operations, allowed to maintain traffic fluidity and minimize impact on drivers. A specific works timetable was put in place to ensure the highway remained fully available during the busiest traffic hours. The works were carried out simultaneously in two locations every time possible.
This completion marks a new phase in the R1 highway’s resurfacing program launched in 2023. Via Pribina will deliver in 2026 the third and final phase of the program, on the highway’s corridor to Bratislava. At the end of this final phase, Via Pribina will have completed resurfacing on the full R1 highway and its intersections, representing the largest modernization works undertaken since opening to service in 2011.
The resurfacing of R1 highway allows to maintain optimal safety and comfort for drivers and ensure the highway’s infrastructure resilience. As the first highway PPP in Slovakia, under the leadership of the Ministry of Transport of the Slovak Republic, Via Pribina demonstrates the enduring success of the Public-Private cooperation and the capacity of the model to meet the performance indicators set by Slovakian public authorities.
