Via Pribina mobilizes for winter operations
- Complex coordination behind-the-scenes to ensure accessibility, safety, and driving comfort
- Months of preparation to train the teams and mobilize the equipment
- New anti-snow barriers introduced for enhanced protection
As winter approaches, Via Pribina and Via Pribina Operations, in charge of 52km highway, has activated its winter operations plan. The team in operational base in Selenec is in full swing, ready to face the significant challenges of winter.
New snow barriers
As part of its winter strategy, Via Pribina has deployed the total of 3,370 meters of snow barriers, strategically positioned along the expressway to face prevailing winds, preventing snowdrifts and ensuring clear roads.
This year, a key innovation includes the introduction of new snow barriers made from durable materials and quipped with galvanized steel components and tensioned steel cables for optimal stability. These barriers prevent snowdrifts on the roads by containing the snow at the barrier’s location.
Noise barriers, spanning a total length of 32 km, also help prevent snow from drifting onto the road.
Keeping the highway accessible and safe
Ensuring uninterrupted highway access is the top priority during winter. Without effective snow and ice clearing, the highway would quickly become impassable, causing significant disruptions to mobility. To act before snowfall affects road accessibility, Via Pribina monitors continuously weather conditions and anticipates changes. At the first snowfall, the Via Pribina team initiates operations to ensure uninterrupted traffic flow. While snow-clearing operations are mandated to begin within 30 minutes of the first snowflake, the team consistently exceeds this standard by reacting almost immediately.
Winter also requires additional safety mobilization from Via Pribina highway. In cold weather, engine failures are more frequent, car fluids can freeze, and car tires become less adapted to driving. To assist drivers in need, teams are prepared to intervene more frequently and quickly.
An extensive mobilization behind the scenes
Winter preparation doesn’t begin with the first snowfall. Via Pribina has been operationally mobilizing for several weeks. The team of operators has undergone annual training and the winter fleet, which includes snowploughs, salt spreaders, and brine sprayers, is fully equipped for the season. In addition to these preparations, Via Pribina has also launched a winter driving tips campaign for drivers.
Key figures for winter operations on Via Pribina
- 34 Operators on duty: teams working in shifts, ensuring 24/7 readiness during winter conditions.
- 14 Snow-clearing vehicles: A fleet of specialized vehicles, including snowplows, salt spreaders, and brine sprayers, are deployed strategically across operational bases.
- 1,200 tons of salt: Reserves are stored in 4 strategically located silos and storage facilities, ensuring readiness for immediate deployment, with additional salt replenished as needed.
- 30 Minutes to respond: snow-clearing operations are initiated within minutes of snowfall detection to prevent snow accumulation and maintain road accessibility.
Safety awareness and accident prevention winter campaign
Via Pribina has also launched a winter tips campaign, featuring new visuals on the website and social media channels. These tips aim to help road users drive safely during the winter months, complementing the operational measures in place to ensure smooth mobility on the R1 expressway. By combining modern equipment, expert teams, and innovative solutions, Via Pribina Operations continues to set high standards for winter road safety and driver comfort.
